Rural Development Society

The Rural Development Society(RDS) in Kalaw participates in development since 1993. It has been legaly founded by several chiefs of different ethnic tribes in the surroundings of Kalaw. It has been financed by several "funds for development". Since the year 2000 the members of the cooperative have succeeded to obtain a part of self-financing. They do so by selling artisanal Shan products to tourists in a small shop in Kalaw. The benefits are re-invested in projects that benefit the whole community

The RDS tries to get water supply to all villages, better sanitation, economical diversification, better education, better health care, agricultural education, re-forestation etc. Here you see them making a pipeline from a water-pit to the village. At the end of 2004 25 tribal villages containing approximate 26250 people are the target group of the RDS.
